Veterans supporting veterans through practical help and genuine connection.

Lawn Duty is a veteran-led initiative that delivers free lawn mowing and garden maintenance to elderly and isolated veterans and their families across the Illawarra.

Born from the Walk With Us Kokoda program, it transforms the spirit of service into real, ongoing support — helping older veterans maintain their independence while reducing isolation through genuine connection and mateship.

More than mowing.
It’s community.

For many older veterans, maintaining their home and garden becomes difficult with age. Lawn Duty removes that burden while providing something even more valuable — human connection.

Our volunteers don’t just mow lawns. They check in, share stories, and remind veterans that their service is still respected and that they are not forgotten. Lawn Duty is about dignity, mateship and providing support in an authentic and practical way.

Most lawn care services are transactional. Lawn Duty is relational.

Here’s what makes us different:

  • Delivered by veterans, for veterans — Our volunteers are former service members who understand military culture, mateship, and the unique challenges older veterans face.

  • Completely free — There is no cost to the recipient. Ever.

  • Genuine connection included — We don’t just mow and leave. Volunteers often stay for a cuppa and a yarn, reducing isolation and checking in on wellbeing.

  • Memorials matter too — In addition to private lawns, we maintain and restore local war memorials as an act of ongoing respect and remembrance.

  • Born from service — Lawn Duty was created by Walk With Us Kokoda alumni who wanted to continue serving their community after returning from the track.

This isn’t a commercial service. It’s service after service.

It Started with One Conversation.

At an ANZAC Day event, veteran Paul Biddle spoke with Lachlan Stevens about the struggle many older veterans face maintaining their homes. That single conversation planted the seed for Lawn Duty.

Paul went on to create a veteran-led initiative that now delivers free lawn mowing and genuine connection to elderly veterans across the Illawarra — turning a simple idea into meaningful, ongoing service.

OUR IMPACT.

Lawn Duty was born from a simple belief — that veterans shouldn’t have to worry about the small things as they get older.

What we’ve discovered is something far more meaningful. Behind every mown lawn is a conversation, a cup of tea, and a quiet reminder that these veterans are still seen, respected, and valued. It’s practical help, delivered with dignity and genuine human connection.
